Offa's Dyke was built in the 8th century and stretches from north Wales.

The dyke didn't take a direct route but, as demonstrated here, often took the path that gained most land while allowing a vantage point to keep an eye on the Welsh.  In this case down onto "The Devil's Pulpit" and site of what was later Tintern Abbey.
