About Us

…forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world. We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and "X" never, ever, marks the spot.’
Indiana Jones  (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)

A registered charity, Dean Archaeological Group is an entirely voluntary group of enthusiastic amateur archaeologists. We pride ourselves on our informal and friendly approach and our membership accommodates a wide age range of interests both in prehistoric and historical archaeology.

Over the last 30 years or so we have established a close working relationship with a number of local organisations. These include The Dean Heritage Centre, Gloucester Archaeology, The Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service, Worcestershire County Council Archaeology Service, Monmouth Archaeology and the Forest of Dean Local History Society.

DAG has a library covering a wide spectrum of local archaeological and historical topics for the use of members and we are happy to give talks about archaeology to other groups, or to promote archaeology in general. We often have a presence at community events in the Forest.

We have a hands-on approach to archaeology but if you are not able, or don’t want to dig, don’t worry, that is not a problem. There are many important activities such as surveying, photographing, recording and the processing of finds which you can take part in and all are enjoyable and rewarding. Age and physical prowess (or lack of it) is not a barrier. All you need is an interest in archaeology.
